WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS Art of Reuse This workshop features a hands-on approach to utilizing reusable materials in the classroom. Learn how to incorporate MFTA’s valuable resources into your programs. Create sculptures, instruments, bugs, wishing sticks, picture frames and more. Discover innovative ways to construct meaningful pieces of artwork from reusable materials and be inspired to become a regular MFTA shopper. Theater ArtsParticpants will learn about the varioius art pieces involved in theater productions. Sessions will focus on: mask-making, hats and accessories, costumes and the basics for easy set designs. Musical Instruments Join teaching artist Skip LaPlante as he teaches the art of making of musical instruments from reusable materials. We will be constructing flute-like instruments, drums, and guitars made out of styrofoam and cardboard tubes. At the end of the workshop, we will explore ideas about how to use these instruments in a classroom setting. Dolls and Puppets In this MFTA workshop you will learn how to make dolls and puppets using a wide range of materials from our warehouse. Teaching artist, Timothy D. Bellavia will share the art of doll and puppet making that can be easily replicated into your classroom the next day. Dolls and puppets that will be introduced include shadow, giant, fabric, and sock puppets as well as the "Sage" doll. Mobiles, Chimes, and Whirly-Gigs
In this workshop, you will learn to design a variety of suspended sculptures that will turn, twist, jingle, and move with the aid of air currents. We will use filament wire, metal, plastic, wire, screws nails, nuts, bolts, beads, buttons, and electrical and plumbing supplies - all materials that are readily available at MFTA. Games and Game boardsReferencing games from early civilization into the 21st century-create your own game and game board using mat board, foam core, cardstock, buttons, trim, nuts, bolts and a variety of odd shaped manipulatives and pieces found on the warehouse floor. Paper TreatmentsDon't spend a dime on wrapping paper-learn techniques including rubbings, stamping, origami, and marbeling to create beautiful textures and designs, turning your ordinary paper into a piece of art! MosaicsLearn a variety of mosaic design and techniques and create you very own tile using glass, clay shards, plastic, jewels, beads and buttons. Basketry with Netting Thinking in terms of utility and function as an art piece, create your very own vessel using a variety of netting materials including jute, plastic and bamboo- weave intricate designs with organic and inorganic materials. Holiday Gift MakingWhy spend money on gifts this holiday season? Learn to create a variety of fun products that anyone would be happy to receive. Some examples include:napkin holder rings, decoupage serving trays, jewelry boxes, button bracelets, baskets made with glue. Fabric Postcards Learn to make, sew, and embellish postcards made from scraps of fabric. Techniques include collage, simple embroidery stitches, and quilt construction on a small scale. The finished product can be mailed to friends and family. Learn how the fabric postcard can be used as the basis for fabric art journals and 3-D works of art. Book Making This series is a fun introduction to the making of books. With great paper, cards, photo stock books, envelopes, ribbons and trims provided from the warehouse, each week you will receive the tools and techniques needed to create products that are easy to reproduce. Session 1 - Intro to Bookmaking This session will concentrate on binding techniques using a variety of alternative materials. Prototypes include Five Stitch Chinese binding, accordion books, flip books, envelope books and simple pop ups.
Session 2 - Advanced Bookmaking More advanced techniques in bookbinding will be introduced. Participants will stitch the pamphlets they have created into bound books.
