Paul L. King (ex-officio) Executive Director; Director of Theater
Programs Office of the Arts and Special Projects New York City Department of Education
Paul L. King is Executive Director and Director of Theater
Programs for the Office of the Arts and Special Projects of the New York City
Department of Education.
Paul was previously the Director of Education and Community Service
for the New York City Opera; a position he held for seven years. Formerly a
stage director, Paul has directed for the New York City Opera, Houston Grand
Opera and Los Angeles Opera among others. He was also the Festival
Administrative Manager for the Central City Opera and Director of the Young
Artist Training Program for Glimmerglass Opera.
As a union stage manager and stage director (member of Actor’s Equity and
American Guild of Musical Artists), Paul has worked with Sir Peter Hall, Mark
Lamos, Scott Ellis, Lee Breuer and Emily Mann among other prominent artists.
Paul has served as an artist educator for various opera companies and
theaters in the United
States with over twelve years experience in
high school, middle school and elementary school
instruction. Additionally, he has been a teacher, stage director and guest
artist for singer training programs at Chautauqua Opera, The Glimmerglass Opera,
The Manhattan School of Music and SUNY/Purchase.
Paul was the recipient of the 2008 Broadway Theatre League’s Apple
Educator Award and is a member of the Mayor’s Task Force on Diversity in Film,
Television, and Commercial Production in New York City. He was a fellow at the
Empire
State Partnership/New York
State Council for the Arts 2002-Summer Seminar and served as a member of the New
York City Dept. of Education’s Pre-Professional Advisory Committee for
Performing and Visual Arts. Paul also served as a grant review panelist for the
Surdna and Doris Duke Foundations on the Talented Students in the Arts
initiative. Formerly, he was a member of the Center for Arts Education Parents
as Arts Partners Advisory Board.
Paul holds a B.A in Theater from Colorado College and a M.F.A. in Performing Arts Management
from Brooklyn
College. He lives in
New York City and has two children in New York City public
schools.
