Queens Day 20075/3/07MFTA's Queens Day Downright Kingly On May 3rd, Materials for the Arts celebrated its home borough, welcoming over forty recipient group from Queens to the 2007 Queens Shopping Day. The warehouse was festooned with monarchic memorabilia, and schools and arts groups discussed their queenliness while shopping, but the jewel of this crown was the trivia contest. The Queens Day 2007 Trivia Contest pitted group against group in a battle of wits over the storied culture, history, botany, linguistics, demography, architecture and mythology of Queens. On May the 3rd, in Long Island City, the location of All in the Family, the identity of Nathan Hale, and Eddie Murphy's motive for coming to Queens in Coming to America took centerstage, as recipients scribbled feverishly and made hushed "lifeline" calls to win the ultimate prize. In a sense, every recipient was a winner; but in another, more technically accurate sense, the following organizations came out on top: PS 152 (Mariela Rodriguez); JHS 192 (Greta Nathaniel); the Queens Library Gallery (Sarah Mostow); and Sunnyside Community Services (Rita Manton). Each winner received a laminated Queens-shaped card, entitling them to any item from MFTA's future inventory. What did this entail? Well, two recipients had immediate requests. One wanted a blue Lincoln Navigator, but quickly retracted this selection when she realized she would not be notified about the availability of a red or pink Lincoln Navigator. Another recipient set the bar a little lower: plastic fruit. Congratulations to the winners, and a Merry Queens Day to all. Return To The Main Gallery Page |
