On November 5th, the Producers Guild of America East and other film industry professionals met at the Walter Reed Theater to discuss best practices for reducing their carbon footprint. The growing concern by studio executives trickles down to the members in the trenches and has prompted action in addressing the hurdles experienced when applying green solutions to their production plans. Moderated by Katie Carpenter, a partner at Green Media Solutions and an accomplished documentary producer, we met innovators in the field who are leading by example and making the three R’s - Reducing Reusing and Recycling - a priority. Everything from leftover set dressings to craft services are being looked at with fresh eyes and when necessary, they are reaching out to members of the Reuse Sector for help. They hope their efforts to keep waste from entering the landfills will benefit their community and train a new generation of green production designers, set dressers, directors and producers. Members of the panel included Karena Albers, Tim Metzger, Mari Jo Winkler and Eva Radke of Film Recycling Biz. This event was the third in the Green Screens series, a calendar of seminars about going green in film productions. It was made possible by the PGA East, Earthmark Green Media Solutions and the Film Society of Lincoln Center. For more information concerning the Green Screens series please go to www.fillinc.com
