Fifth grade classes from PS 87 Queens recently visited MFTA for a Giant Puppet-making fieldtrip. Working in small groups, students share their strengths towards their character’s creation. Who wants to create the puppet’s face? Who wants to design the clothes? When presenting, who wants to speak, or animate the arms, or work the head? Teamwork in action, giant puppets are a great way for students to share their varying strengths and interests.
How do students come up with ideas for their puppets? We’ve found it helpful to pass out character studies for students to complete before they even start working with materials. Planning in advance, on paper, makes students better-guided as they begin to work. Most importantly, the handout allows them to thoroughly flesh-out their characters. More clearly defined characters make more detailed puppets, and more details bring the puppets to life!
