Topaz Arts was formed in 2000, when they purchased a mailing distribution warehouse and transformed it, by hand, into a 2,500 sq. ft. facility equipped with a hand made, energy-efficient heated dance floor, audio/media room, and gallery space. At the time, Topaz was the only contemporary dance space in Queens – at this time there are still only three. In addition to renting out their space for an extremely low cost for rehearsals, founders Paz Tanjuaguio and Todd Richmond offer technical support and, in partnership with the Queens Museum of Art, residency opportunities for artists looking to develop new work. Topaz joined Materials for the Arts in 2001, and is truly a model recipient. Close to 50% of the items in their space -- not just mirrors and tables but sinks, hand trucks, and sound screens -- have been received from MFTA and incorporated into their open, serene aesthetic. In addition, their use of materials fits in perfectly with MFTA’s environmental mission, as their space is designed to be energy efficient in very creative ways. For example, the façade of the space, and the sunroof, are made up of polycarbonate plastic cells that are extremely expensive and hard to find – but which Todd just happened to stumble across at MFTA’s warehouse.
Effective use of MFTA's services and well-run visits to the MFTA warehouse often reflect a first-rate organization. We at Materials for the Arts are thrilled that Todd and Paz were able to use MFTA supplies to transform a raw space from neighborhood organization into a NYC destination. Topaz Arts is a place worth visiting, whether you're looking for rehearsal space, gallery space, teachnical assistance, or a pleasant afternoon.
