Bringing Literacy to Life: Shadow Puppetry for English Language Arts with Joy Suarez
Professional Development Workshop for the Chancellor’s Conference Day Thursday, June 7, 2012 from 9:30 am – 3:00 pm Learn to bring literacy to life using shadow puppetry during this hands-on workshop with Joy Suarez at Materials for the Arts. Using items from the recycling bin and free supplies from MFTA, participants will learn techniques to create a variety of shadow puppets and set pieces to enhance their students’ comprehension of ELA texts, and engage students in creative classroom projects. Participants will gain tools to bring performance assessment to their classroom as well as creative methods to integrate the Common Core standards for ELA into their lessons. Fee: $45. Click here to sign up. "Art of Reuse" Professional Development WORKSHOP SERIES Learn to make a variety of art projects by creatively reusing items
from your recycling bin and supplies from Materials for the Arts. During
each workshop, participants develop their own art projects
under the guidance of an MFTA teaching artist.
Each hands-on workshop includes an instructor-led demonstration as well
as studio time when participants gain experience working with a variety of found
materials to develop project ideas and prototypes suitable for their specific
instructional setting.

in the workshop. staff development workshop: "Artistic reuse to the (common) core"Bring Materials for the Arts to your school to teach staff
how to inspire students on a shoestring budget by integrating art projects made
from free and readily-available materials into the Common Core Standards and
the Children First priorities. Teachers will leave “Artistic Reuse to the
(Common) Core” with a fresh look at how to set up a functional reuse/recycle
classroom: reuse and recycling bins, reuse bulletin boards and lots of free or
low-cost art projects made with common materials that are free and easy to
collect all year long. Teachers will have plenty of studio time to work with
materials and everyone leaves with prototypes to take back to their classes. STAFF DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP: teaching the math common core with art (k-5th grades)Learn to inspire and
engage students in K-5 math classes using art projects to teach the
Common Core Mathematics Standards.
Teaching artists Joy Suarez and John Kaiser will show teachers and
school staff free or low-cost art projects including Weavings, Board
Games, Math Materials (counting sticks, manipulatives) and Mosaics,
which can be used to reach different types of learners in math.
Participants will have plenty of studio time to develop projects suited
for their specific instructional settings and everyone will leave with
prototypes for use in the classroom.
Teaching the Math Common Core with Art (K-5th Grade)
professional development workshopsThese
hands-on professional development workshops are designed for teachers,
afterschool staff, arts programmers, social service providers and those
with an interest in making art. Each two-hour workshop includes
instruction from teaching artists and studio time when participants can
put their own spin on project ideas. Any of these workshops can be
